Attitude of gratitude

It’s not happiness that brings us gratitude, it’s gratitude that brings us happiness. In this high-speed world, we live in it’s easy to get distracted and caught up with doing more, achieving more, and wanting more. This often creates an unhappy feeling of never having enough. But when we pause and take time to appreciate all that we do have it brings a sense of calmness that instantly create happiness from within.

Health, community and time for self love are just a few of the many things we can be grateful for.

Humble Warrior pose

Humble warrior pose is a forward bend that requires stability and flexibility throughout the body – especially in the hips, legs, shoulders, and back.

In humble warrior pose, the legs are positioned in a lunge (as in warrior one), with the hips squared toward the front of the mat. The hands are interlaced behind the back with the palms touching. The body hinges at the hips and folds forward as the arms stretch toward the head. The crown of the head may touch the floor – if not, the gaze should be toward the ground.

The pose is also known as devotional warrior pose, bound warrior pose, or silver surfer pose. The Sanskrit name for this pose is baddha Virabhadrasana, which is derived from the name of the Hindu warrior, Virabhadra.

Humble warrior is so named because it mimics bowing humbly to the Divine as the focus is drawn inward.

Additional benefits of this asana include:

  • Fosters acceptance
  • Stimulates the nervous system
  • Stimulates the abdominal organs
  • Opens the lungs and chest
  • Stretches the shoulders, arms, legs, back, and neck
  • Opens the hips
  • Strengthens the legs and ankles

To prevent injury, the bent knee should not extend beyond the ankle. Those with limited flexibility can practice the pose by clasping their hands around their elbows or by holding a towel between their hands. A wider stance may also ease the strain on the hips.

The Let It Go Workshop

The let it go workshop is an experience of healing past trauma through a combination of yoga, journaling, and conversation. Throughout this unique experience, Lockey guides participant’s through the exercises and practices she utilized to heal her past trauma from alcoholic parents, childhood sex trafficking, and in her adult life, cancer and her mother’s murder investigation. The most important aspect of Lockey’s healing journey came as she discovered that healing is not a one and done event.  Healing takes time and personal commitment. Most importantly, a sense of humor.


bodhi gives back donation-based yoga class

Every month we host a donation-based yoga class and give 100% of the proceeds to a different Non-Profit Organization.

All donations go to the Brain Injury Alliance of NJ.  The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey (BIANJ) is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life people experience after brain injury.
